Apply for Funding

Grants

Review our Fall and Spring Grants here.

TGIF offers two grant cycles per academic year. In September, our annual fall “mini-grant” grant program opens, providing up to $50,000 total for short-term projects. TGIF’s Spring grant program offers grants over $5,000 and continues to annually award over ~$400,000 to larger and more complex projects. All Environmental Justice proposals will be reviewed first by TGIF’s Committee in the selection process.

Fall Grant Cycle

The Fall mini-grant program takes place during the fall semester and awards grants up to $5,000 to small projects that must be completed within the current academic year.

Interested applicants must attend a TGIF Info Session or schedule a 1:1 with TGIF Staff before applying for funding. The Fall mini-grant is a single application, and projects must be submitted by Friday, October 20th at 5 PM PST to be considered.

Fall mini-grant requests must be no larger than $5,000.

2023 Fall Grant Deadline

Friday, October 20th, 2023 @5pm PST

STEPS TO APPLY:
Submit the 1) Mini-Grant Application, 2) Project Approval Form(s), and 3) TGIF Budget Spreadsheet by the deadline. Project Leaders must have also attended a TGIF Info Session or 1:1 with TGIF Staff before the application deadline.

Failure to submit these three forms or meet with the TGIF team will disqualify your application. Also, pay close attention to the requirements listed in the grant application submission form.  We will be strictly enforcing the five-page application maximum and no late applications will be accepted.

Mini-Grant Application Forms

  1. Mini-Grant Application
    • The Environmental Justice Supplemental Questions are now optional for all projects, if they wish to elaborate on the Environmental Justice aspects of their Project.
    • Projects will be designated as Environmental Justice-focused by the Environmental Justice at-large Representative, in consultation with the TGIF team.
  2. Mini-Grant Project Approval Form
    • If your project team is partnering with other organizations, departments, or needs permission to undertake a specific project, please submit a completed Project Approval Form for each named entity. For example, if you are attempting to do a project in the dining halls, you would need a project approval from a Cal Dining staff member.
  3. TGIF Budget Spreadsheet
    • Fill out the spreadsheet, adding budget sections as needed. See the bottom of the spreadsheet for more information

Spring Grant Cycle

The spring grant program gives preference to larger and more complex projects. It is a two-stage application process and occurs during the spring semester. There are 3 deadlines of which to be aware:

1) Optional Early Abstract deadline (Stage 1)

2) Final Abstract deadline (Stage 1)

3) Final Application deadline (Stage 2)

Applicants must first submit an abstract form by one of two possible deadlines: Friday, February 10th, 2023 (Early Abstract) or Friday, March 10th, 2023 (Final Abstract).

If TGIF’s Committee invites your Early Abstract to Stage 2, you do not need to resubmit a Final Abstract; however, if TGIF’s Committee provides comments and feedback to your Early Abstract, you are required to incorporate the recommendations and re-submit in the Final Abstract stage for consideration in Stage 2.

TGIF’s Committee will invite applicants back upon Stage 2 to submit a Final Application. Not all abstract submissions will be invited to Stage 2.

Spring grant requests must be greater than $5,000.
