The Bear Share Project is a one of a kind initiative aimed at setting up a shared facilities system, potentially saving thousands of dollars per semester and reducing the cost of living on campus especially for newly incoming students and students with less resources.
TGIF Award: $4,250.00
This project builds upon a past 2015 TGIF funded project by the BFI that created a foodscape map. The BFI used the data from this map to create a Sustainable and Just Catering Guide (SJCG). With this project, the BFI hopes to help campus departments and student groups adopt the SJCG, which will help reduce plastic use and food waste, and will emphasize small, diverse businesses. The money will go towards a graduate student fellow, with a small amount going towards outreach material.
TGIF Award: $4,169.00
This project aims to bridge the cultural disconnect in the BSFC's food prep service by hiring a Culinary Cultures Education Associate to do outreach work. The food prep system diverts food that would otherwise be wasted into cooked meals that are offered on a sliding scale of $1-5. Through this project, the BSFC hopes to help students understand the cultural history of their food and avoid perpetuating the white capitalist nature of our food system. Money will go towards the student salary, with a small amount going towards outreach material.
TGIF Award: $4,793.65
The goal of the project is to build a rooftop garden at La Loma to test out rooftime garden technologies. The space will be an interactive learning environment where students from different disciplines (engineering, sustainability, design, etc) can apply their knowledge. The hope is that UC Berkeley will consider rooftop gardens in future development projects. The money will go towards tools, website fees, and small student stipends ($50/each)
TGIF Award: $5,000.00
Project aims to connect disenfranchised students of color with traditional ecological knowledge about growing food. The project leaders currently do that through their decal, which operates around the Barker Hall Garden. It also reads as if they want to turn more campus spaces into gardens/farms. Money will go towards gardening supplies and two student stipends.
TGIF Award: $4,505.00
This is an extension of a past TGIF funded project that recycled plastic filament from failed 3D printing projects on campus. This grant would help use this recycling technique to create a completely closed-loop system for recycling 3D printing plastics throughout campus. Money will go towards final materials necessary to complete the project.
TGIF Award: $2,183.01
This is a pilot composting project to take place at three fraternity houses. The goal is to institutionalize use of compostable cups instead of single-use solo cups, which end up in landfills. Cups will be subsidized by the IFC/ASUC or a combination of both; disposal of the cups will be coordinated by volunteers from on-campus sustainability groups. Money will go towards bins, bags, gloves, and signage.
TGIF Award: $652.29
Money will go to purchasing a new refill fountain for the Botanical Garden to reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles sold at their store (goal is to reduce by 75%).
TGIF Award: $3,200.00
